PFA Scotland has now hosted two ‘My Future Now’ events in February 2020 and March 2021.
The inaugural event in Feb 2020, aimed at 2nd year apprentices coming to the end of their contracts, was held over 3 days in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth with 100 young players in attendance from clubs across the Premiership and Championship.
Due to the COVID pandemic, this year’s event had to be held online. However, the attendance was as impressive as in 2020 with over 100 young players taking part.
In the first year of the event, the players were taught skills like creating a CV and basic interview techniques to enable them to prepare for a second career and applying for potential employment or studies in the future.
They also heard from senior players who shared the experiences of their football journey and their transition to life after playing.
This year’s event was tailored to suit the current climate with sessions on mental fitness from Sigmoid’s Gavin Whyte and a resilience workshop with Believe Perform as well as information sessions from the Open University and Skills Development Scotland.
In addition there was an engaging presentation on Ameican scholarships from event sponsor FirstPointUSA.
My Future Now was put together by our Personal Development Officer Chris Higgins and plans are currently underway for next year’s event, which we hope will be back to face-to-face rather than digital.
